The following article discusses the use and applications of on-chain collectives and the Collective Parachain for the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystem.

Introduction
After the success of Statemine and Statemint, the common good parachain team at Parity have been working on the launch of other common good chains based on feedback received from other teams/parachains in the ecosystem. The Collective is the next of these new common good chains, which has been successfully producing blocks on Polkadot since November 22, 2022.
You can see the official proposal for common-good parachains here: https://polkadot.network/blog/proposal-for-common-good-parachains/
The Collectives common-good parachain will enable on-chain assemblages to be formed and managed as collectives. These collectives in many ways represent the evolution of groups such as the Technical Committee and Governance Council which for Kusama (and eventually Polkadot and many parachains) are in the process of being replaced by the Polkadot Fellowship, one of the first uses of the on-chain collectives. The Collectives parachain will also be utilized by the Polkadot Alliance for community members contributing to user-safety within the ecosystem, and another collective for members of the Polkadot Ambassador program.
Our team at OAK Network is really excited about the development of the Collectives chain as the transition from off-chain groups to on-chain groups creates a greater level of decentralization and scalability to the overall Polkadot protocol. In many ways the creation of features like Collectives contribute to why our team is so pleased and appreciative to be a growing force within the Dotsama ecosystem.
The Fellowship
The Polkadot Fellowship was announced in tandem with the presentation that introduced Polkadot Governance 2.0 — or now referred to as OpenGov. Polkadots next generation of decentralized governance.
For a comprehensive and official rundown of OpenGov read here: https://polkadot.network/blog/gov2-polkadots-next-generation-of-decentralised-governance/
The Polkadot Fellowship is primarily an advancement and evolution of the original Polkadot and parachain governance bodies of the Technical Committee and Governance Council. The council and committee structure have been critical in implementing change and growth across Polkadot, Kusama, and many parachains such as our canary network Turing, but offer a risk of centralization that Parity has always intended to address. The Fellowship can be thought of as the logic successor to the Technical Committee.
The Fellowship utilizes the Collectives parachain to allow members of the Fellowship to vote on proposals and aggregate the opinions of its members (using a weighted tier system) ensuring that a greater diversity of expertise and knowledge is considered creating a much more effective and organically decentralized methodology for enacting on-chain change to the Polkadot protocol.
As our ecosystem continues growing its likely to see the Fellowship Collective grow to hundreds or thousands of members to help capture sentiments and represent the humans who embody and contain the technical knowledge and understanding of the Polkadot protocol.
The Alliance
The Polkadot Alliance is an on-chain collective of individuals, community members, professionals, networks, and organisations that are committed to upholding a set of core ethics and values for maintaining a healthy and secure Polkadot development environment. It is officially the first registered collective.
The Alliance works as a industry collective that collaborates together to help prevent negative and dangerous behavior within the ecosystem and recognize teams and individuals who make positive contributions to the growth and success of the Polkadot and Kusama networks.
The Alliance has contributed to a variety of scam prevention initiatives and will continue to support our ecosystem as an on-chain collective by evaluating projects to provide insight and create education materials to help prevent nefarious activity across the ecosystem.
The Polkadot Alliance is currently only accepting membership from Polkadot Ambassadors — new members will be available to join in the future. Check out the anti-scam Discord channel on the Polkadot Discord.
OAK Network and its team members are committed to supporting and collaborating with the Alliance collective to help with the goals of establishing a body to help protect our ecosystem from bad actors.
The Ambassador Program
The Polkadot Ambassador program has been operating since 2019 across the globe with running a variety of community initiatives to help grow the Polkadot and Kusama ecosystems. The ambassador program members contribute to a variety of different projects from all regions and are currently open for new candidates. Ambassadors contribute to growing Polkadot and also appreciate:
- Sharing knowledge and expertise
- Learning new skills
- Interacting with like-minded people
- Being the voice of the community
Full information about the Polkadot Ambassador program and how you may apply can be found here: https://polkadot.network/blog/polkadot-ambassador-program/
The Ambassador program moving towards an on-chain collective marks another key advancement in the complete decentralization of Polkadot. Removing the reliance on Web2 infrastructure for on-chain structures and functionality helps grow the applications and potential for Web3. Reputable members of the ambassador program will be able to visibly endorse products and services on-chain utilizing their experience to help guide new users and leverage their skills and understanding.
Conclusion
The common good Collectives parachain is another example of features that demonstrates the innovative approach to development that separates Polkadot from other ecosystems. Our team at OAK Network is looking forward to utilizing the Collective parachain and other Common-Good chains that are created in the future.
The potential to move groups from off-chain to on-chain using the Collective parachain signals an important step in the creation of an all encompassing decentralized financial system.
